Passive Voice: How to Teach It With Clear Examples

The passive voice is one rule and a change of emphasis: take a form of be, add the past participle, and the action moves to the front while the doer steps back or disappears. The letter was written by Kim. That pattern covers every tense; only the form of be changes. This guide puts it in one table, shows when the passive is the better choice, and lists the mistakes that keep appearing in learners' work.

Passive voice: form at a glance

Passive voice: form at a glance
TensePassive formExample
present simpleis / are + past participleThe machines are checked every morning.
past simplewas / were + past participleThe bridge was built in 1998.
present perfecthas / have been + past participleThe email has been sent.
futurewill be + past participleThe results will be published on Friday.
modalmodal + be + past participleThe form must be signed by a parent.
continuousis / was being + past participleThe road is being repaired this week.

Read the table as one rule with different helpers: be carries the tense, the past participle carries the meaning. That is why an active sentence and its passive partner describe the same event in the same tense, only from a different seat in the story.

What the passive actually changes

Compare The committee approved the plan with The plan was approved by the committee. No fact has been added; what changed is which element sits in the subject position. Active sentences lead with the doer, passive sentences with the receiver. That shift manages emphasis, and The road is being repaired this week is not lazy writing, because the workers are irrelevant.

When the passive is the right choice

Process writing, lab reports and instructions rely on it for the same reason: the method matters more than the person performing it.

When the active voice is better

The passive earns its place through a purpose, and loses it when the writer is only padding. An empty agent weakens a sentence: The report was written by the team is longer and no more informative than The team wrote the report. Stacked passives drain energy from a paragraph: The proposal was reviewed and it was decided that changes were needed hides three actors. A rough rule: keep the passive where the process is the subject, and switch to the active where a named actor makes the sentence concrete.

A four-step teaching sequence

  1. Find the two parts. Give a list of passive sentences and ask students to underline the form of be and circle the past participle. Recognition first, production later.
  2. Transform with a purpose. Convert active to passive in pairs, but ask which version reads better and why.
  3. Walk through the tenses. Move one sentence through the table above so students see that only the helper changes, adding past participles from the irregular verbs table as you go.
  4. Choose, then justify. Finish with a paragraph where some sentences should be passive and some active, and ask the class to defend each choice.

If your class is shaky on the past simple, spend a lesson on the past simple drill first, since that tense supplies the was and were this structure depends on.

The mistakes learners make most often

Almost every incorrect passive sentence is one of the five below.

How to practise the passive

Two habits build accuracy fastest: spotting the two parts of the structure instantly, and knowing which verbs cannot be turned around.

Start with a short set that asks for the right form of be, then add participle recall from the irregular verbs drill. When the tense holds up alone, put it under pressure in the mixed review or the timed challenge. For the classroom, print the material as a worksheet with an answer key or combine topics in the worksheet builder; the past simple vs present perfect guide covers the contrast learners mix up with it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the passive voice in one sentence?

The passive voice is be plus a past participle: The letter was written. The subject receives the action instead of doing it, and the person doing it is either absent or moved to the end after by. Compare He wrote the letter with The letter was written by him.

How do I choose between the active and the passive?

Choose the passive when the doer is unknown, obvious or better left unnamed, and when the result should lead the sentence: The bridge was built in 1998. Choose the active when the doer matters, because an active sentence is usually shorter and easier to read: The committee approved the plan beats The plan was approved by the committee.

Why is The letter was wrote wrong?

The passive needs the past participle, not the past simple. Write has the forms write, wrote and written, so the passive is was written. The same slip produces was took instead of was taken. Drill the three forms of irregular verbs together and the mistake usually disappears.

Can every verb be used in the passive?

No. Only transitive verbs, which take an object, can be made passive: someone wrote the letter, so the letter was written. Intransitive verbs such as happen, arrive, sleep, come and die have no object to promote, so It was happened and She was arrived are impossible.

When should students start learning the passive voice?

After they can form the past simple and the past participles of common irregular verbs, usually around A2 to B1 level. Start with the present and past simple passive in news and process descriptions, then add the present perfect and future passive.
